Default Macro Lens

Hi,

I have been considering getting a macro lens for my Pentax SLR camera. Someone recommended the Tamron AF 90 mm f/2.8. There is one on E bay for $387.00 & another one for $399.00, Canadian prices but I live in Canada. Is this good price for this lens? Am I better to buy it new or is getting it off Ebay okay? I have never ordered from Ebay so am a little nervous about spending that kind of money on there.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

Janice

Hi Janice - the Tamron 90 Di is an outstanding macro lens (it's also great for portraiture and street shooting) - many of the macro shots on my SmugMug website (see the link below) were taken with this lens. Check out the prices at KEH, B&W and Adorama - you can buy from any of them with confidence.

The Tamron 90mm is a fine 1:1 macro lens. Another option is the Sigma 105mm f/2.8.

Have a look at the great macro shots posted by Pentax forum regular Ronny.
He uses a K5 and Sigma 105mm.

New is probably best, but I wouldn't have too many reservations about
buying a used lens as long as it is in mint condition. I bought an as-new
example of the Sigma 105mm for Canon from an Internet auction site.
Because the seller was local, I was able to inspect the lens before I
parted with my money.

Can you give me the web addresses for KEH & B&W as I am not familiar with them. I found Adorama. The lens on there is $450.00 but I would also have to pay shipping since I am in Canada. Do you know of any good Canadian places I could order from? I could order from a photography store where I live but thought it might be cheaper to get it online & that used would be less expensive although if I am spending that kind of money I am a bit leary of ordering off of EBay.

Sorry I meant B&H (getting mixed up with the filter manufacturer) ! Both have excellent used lenses/cameras sections.

B&H : http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
KEH : http://www.keh.com/

Amazon is always a good bet and extremely safe to buy from (they usually have a selection of used lenses too and of course have a Canadian Amazon).

No idea about Canada I'm afraid. As always Google is your friend

Janice - I've used several macro lenses, but have never used the Tamron. You really can't go wrong with any macro lens - all are good, some are great.

You might want to look at the lens reviews over at the Pentax Forums:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/

And the sample photos:

By the way, I have purchased several lenses from KEH. Their ratings are very conservative - have purchased several Bargain Grade lenses that looked almost new, and worked perfectly. They have a fine warranty, and a very lenient return policy as well.

Hope you will be able to post some of your macro photos here soon!!

I don't know which part of Canada you are in....but Don's is a Western Canadian company through the Prairie Provinces and based in Winnipeg.

Henry's is an Eastern Canadian company and based in Toronto, but also has stores in Western Canada (Winnipeg).

Believe they all do mail order and are competitive and have Canadian warranties...not sure about the process or warranty if you live in Canada and buy equipment from another country.

Also London Drugs...a Vancouver based company...has stores throughout Western Canada.

I have bought from all three companies and have been happy with each one.
