Default Harlequin Ducks

These shots were taken yesterday near Rockport, MA. These are uncommon ducks and quite beautiful. They like rocky coastlines and strong wave action.

This was the first time I could get close enough to them for reasonable pictures. I was above them at all times as I had climbed down a rocky stretch to get within photographing distance. If you get to close they move away. All were taken with the K-5 and Sigma 150-500mm at 500mm.
Shutter speed was 1/1000sec and aperture was f18 (-0.3EV). The f stop was high to capture the color. Perhaps higher than I should have been (f11 would have been preferable). ISO was 2500. All the shots are heavy crops.

The last duck is a Red-breasted Merganser. They were resting and the pose was not good. I waited a long time but they did not change position so I moved on.

We saw lots of common Eider, Bufflehead, Long-tailed and Ruddy ducks but they were too far out photograph but were nice to observe in the bird scope. All in all a nice day of birding.

The last shot is of a dory being rowed in Gloucester Harbor. I think they were practicing for a race as they were moving along quickly.

Really nice shots Lou. I've never seen Harlequin Ducks. Do they stick around for the summer?

Glad you had the right equipment, the patience, and the skill to get these very nice photos of some very shy ducks!

Thanks everyone.

Mole - Yes indeed these ducks take off if you approach to close.
