Default Daughter's First DSLR shots

Although now 23 and an avid P&S / mobile phone shooter, this is the first time she's been shooting with a DSLR. I gave her my spare K5 and put the 55-300 lens on it for her (I had a K5 with DA*300) and went looking for people, [email protected] and birds in the local park.

Her first efforts (the old lady is literally the first shot she took) :

Naturally a little shake blur in these but she did well for her first efforts and my crash course in what to look for and composition ! All have some PP.

Thanks for looking !

More hits than misses and several very nice shots. Love the purple squirrel.

Agreed, some great shots there, love the old woman, the damselflies (how could I not?) and flower No.7!

Great first start, indeed. Love the first one, and the flowers are quite good. Out of curiosity, was the camera set to AWB? It looks like it chose "tungsten" for #7, giving it a blue hue. I've had my camera do that occasionally when it's been fairly dark/shadowed before. It actually works with that photo, I think.

Thank you Harriet - I am showing my daughter all of the very positive comments she has received (on a few forums) to fill her with enthusiasm

In fact I very rarely shoot anything in jpg now (though it is nearly always set to AWB when I do) and indeed I believe (need to check) these were also shot in RAW. I think the blue hue is from the light diffused through the trees behind, if contrasted to #8 which is greener due to the different perspective including bushes not trees (though there is still some of the blue light) as the colour of the flowers is spot on.

Your daughter certainly has an eye for composition, and a talent for capturing the essence of each scene or detail. Especially good job on the very expressive portrait (#1), and on the lush day lily with controlled DOF (#8). You need to lend her your camera more often!!

Kevin your daughter obviously listened carefully to you instructions. What a fine first outing with a DSLR. My congratulations to her.
