Default Want a K-01, this is worth a look.

http://theonlinephotographer.typepad...ntax-k-01.html

A great "real world" view.

BTW sold my last Fuji S2Pro and the Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8, great lens but not for me.

An interesting read. I'm still intrigued with the K-01 but then I don't have the budget to get anything new anyway. Glad that there are those willing to take a chance, and then find out that it works well for what they want to do. If nothing else, my interest has gotten me to use live view a whole lot more than I ever did before, and it really is very useful (for years I thought it was just a gimmick more than useful. I've changed my mind).

So you sold the Fuji? What does that leave you with now?

Ira, you beat me to it. I was also going to post a link to that item. I thought it was especially interesting that so many people criticized the design of the K-01 because there is no optical viewfinder nor is there an available EVF. But after taking several thousand shots, this reviewer had no complaints about shooting with the LCD on the back of the camera.

I've never used a K-01, but I've been impressed that in comparison with other similar cameras, it has a large cmos sensor and uses the Pentax K mount, not some new lens mount.

As far as using the LV monitor only as a viewfinder....I find with my Canon G 12....the LV monitor works great. The G 12 does have a eye level finder, but I don't find it useful as it only covers 77 % of the view and when I've used it for the telephoto aspect of this camera....I find it awkward, slow and inaccurate.

So...a K-01 that may just use a LV monitor....may be ok....but I wonder...how is the LV monitor for quickly finding subjects with telephoto lens ?

I dunno....just pondering and something I would check out if I was thinking of a K-01.

BTW, I've heard from those (industry people) who have handled the new K30 that this seems like quite an impressive camera....maybe it would be worth the wait to see how it compares to the K-01.

A good read, thanks Ira.

I ended up picking up a Sony NEX instead of a K-01 and it really has exceeded all my expectations.

Harriet

I now have just the Olympus cameras here with me. I have most of my Pentax gear, I sold the DL, the F 100-300mm, and the non-WR kit lenses (both the 18-55 and the 50-200) to a beginner who is having a ball with them. My main kit now will consist of:

The K20D with grip
FA 50mm f1.4
FA 35mm f2 (this may end up on the Olympus with an adapter)
FA 28-105mm f3.2-4.5 (in Silver)
FA 28-70mm f4 (flimsy build but marvelous optically)
DA 10-17mm fisheye
DA 14mm f2.8
DA 18-55mm WR
DA 50-200mm WR
FA-J 75-300mm (still my only long lens and I have 2, one black and one silver, I will try each out, keep the best and sell the other to a friend of mine who needs a longer lens)

Annette has the K100D Super and the DA 35mm f2.4 and usually takes the two WR lenses with her when she wants to do a photo outing.

Annette's brother has my other DL with an old silver FA 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 since his point and shoot couldn't keep up with his kids.

I gave the K10D and some mf lenses to my son Matt, along with another DA 18-55 I picked up cheap.

As for the future, I have tried a K-01 and although I liked it, the AF is slower and less reliable than my Olympus E-P2 (which isn't exactly swift) so if a new Pentax is in my future (with my new reduced budget it is unlikely for quite some time) it would probably be a K30. A lot to like about that camera, hope it lives up to its hype.

As for live view LCDs, I am using that on my Olympus almost all the time. The EVF costs more than I paid for either camera body so it is not on my list. I did get the 17mm Optical viewfinder which I put on the camera but rarely use. I don't find the LCD on the K-01 to be the deal breaker, in fact it is far better than what I am using now with the Olympus.

Ishino, I also looked at the NEX, their LCD screens were far better, image quality (especially resolution and high ISO) is better and focus peaking is a real bonus but the higher price of both the camera bodies and the (rather limited selection) lenses put me off. I only paid $250 for a new E-P2, the NEX 7, or even the 5n were far more expensive. I really like the NEX 7 with the Zeiss 24mm but that would be very expensive so it is E-P2 with Olympus 17mm for not much more than 1/4 of that cost.

You still have a good amount of photo stuff, and can understand your interest in the K30. I'm glad that I'm not unhappy with my current gear since I have no budget for anything else. I expect that my next purchase(s) will be two (maybe 3 if I win the lottery) lenses. Now that the Pentax USA has gotten more reasonable on the cost of the 16-50, it might go back on my "want" list (though as long as it's over $1,000 it will be behind the Sigma 150-500).

I'm another one who's pretty happy with his Pentax gear. I don't see any camera body purchases for quite some time. But, given my lens collection, I don't expect there'll be much glass purchased soon, either. I have the DA 50mm f/1.8 on preorder. But I think that might be it. It's a combination of both having less discretionary spending power these days as well as Pentax's price adjustments.

But even if I was in the market right now, the K-01, while certainly more useful than many early critics had guessed, leaves me a bit cold. To me, it's a bit of a case of something being neither fish nor fowl. True, it could be filling an important niche - just not one for me. If I were buying a new camera right now, it would probably be a K30.
