For me it's #1 as #1, I think the background variation makes the picture more interesting.

#3 is my #2, the pose and the eye contact (I really think she is looking into the camera lens!) makes it a picture above the average good macro.

Your basic level is pretty high, Penolta, but these two rises above.

Thank you, Kjell - I always value your opinions.

As I tally the "votes," so far, number one is the favorite with #3 a close second.

#1 - 7 votes
#2 - 1
#3 - 5
#4 - 0
#5 - 2

I also think 1 & 3 are the better. My take on the others is that I think I have never seen the "struts" along the leading edges of the wings as clearly as in #2, followed by #5. #5 may have the least distracting background, but it lacks sufficient contrast to make it stand out as well against the background as the others. #4 is OK but could use more DOF.

Thanks to all for contributing.

Further comments are welcome.

Thanks for your comments in my thread.
I have to agree that overall, number 1 is my favorite with number 3 coming in a close second. I like the unique angle and pose of #3 but the clarity and composition of #1 gives it the edge.
I love these dragonflies. The natural engineering involved in their design is a true miracle.

Cheers,
Steve

Great photos penolta

I can't pick a winner... both #1 (for the clarity in the wings) and #3 (for the composition / better colour) 'make it for me'. (Does that make it 0.5 for each?!) lol

What a lovely amount of detail you've captured. Thanks for the series.

For some great photos of the male Flame Skipper, see Steve's (Smac) thread in the Wildlife Forum:

And thanks to visitors from that forum for their comments.
