Default Some recent birds

Have not had time to post much lately - end of summer "busy-ness"in the parks, helping with some special events, and beginning our busy season of nature education for schools...

But have had time for some fun with camera, so wanted to share at least a few recent photos.

Our resident Black Vulture population is always cooperative - and they are such beautiful, photogenic carrion-eaters! Here are some soaking up the morning sun...

And a here they are "primping" and preening... (making themselves look even cuter!)

Our resident cormorants are very shy, but a fine morning sunbath up in the sycamore trees seems to put them in a better mood than usual. These cormorants let me get close enough for a fair shot...

I mentioned in an earlier post that our Great Blue Herons were pretty shy this year. We finally found a bolder one who was willing to pose a bit - again, in the "magic" warmth of morning sunshine...

Have been trying all summer to get a decent shot of our local Little Green Herons. They are small, wary, and very observant. Finally caught up with one near the home park's marina who let me get close enough for a fairly decent shot (once again, in the fine morning sun).

Here are a few more, slightly unusual poses of the same little heron...

Speaking of little birds, our local Hummingbirds' favorite park wildflower is Jewelweed, and the Jewelweed is at peak bloom lately. Here are a few quick snaps of a Hummer, resting between flower snacks while keeping a close eye on the flowers. (These birds seem to spend as much time chasing other hummers away as they do eating and resting!)

Just one more bird for now. We often receive injured or orphaned "critters," and work with local rehabilitators to help them return to the wild. Here's one of those recent arrivals - a fledgeling Mockingbird. This young'un will be released in the wild fairly soon, thanks to a very hard-working rehab team.

Hope you enjoyed a few glimpses of our local birds "at home" in the park, and that you will share your comments & critique!

Thanks for sharing these, Mole. The vultures are always interesting to me.
