Default Foggy Firescald Knob

We continue to enjoy a wonderfully rich, wet spring here in East Tennessee. With plenty of time out on the trail, but little time indoors, I am very far behind in PP of photos. But wanted to share a few from a recent trip up on Firescald Knob - in the Camp Creek Bald area of nearby Greene County.

Here the Appalachian Trail traverses the Tennessee/North Carolina border, mostly following the crest of the mountain - a fine place for springtime views.

This particular morning was especially soggy with the low clouds/high elevation fog. Soggy weather is perfect for the newly-sprouting life - like these budding trilliums and unfurling may apples.

And here are some more fog-gemmed spring plants from up on Firescald Knob - a Solomon's Plume sprout, a Trout Lily, and a Fetterbush about to bloom.

Not all of the trail follows the ridgeline. There are some shady coves along the way as well...

Fog and sun created an unusual phenomenon over at the Blackstack cliffs (just a bit north of the main ridge). It looks like a rainbow around my shadow, projected on the fog below the cliffs. Something like this:

Here's a wider view, to put this in better perspective:

With spring's rapid progress across the East Tennessee hills, I may not have time to stop by much in the next week or so. But hope you enjoyed these misty views, and will share your comments & critique!

Wonderful series, Mole, as usual. Each one tells a little story. I wonder if the rainbow surrounding your shadow is the same effect that creates sundogs?

Gary - So glad you enjoyed these little wet stories! You are probably right about the "fog-bow" - sunlight refracted by mist drops...

Hans - Thanks so much for the kind and specific comments!
