I have tried many times to sneak up and photograph butterflies but they almost always flee before i can get a shot. You obviously have perfected the technique!

Rodney - So glad you enjoyed these little friends. Isn't it amazing how perfect the wings are, even down to the tiniest shimmering detail!

MtnMan - Technique varies by species of course, but what has worked best for me is not to try to chase them, but to wait for them to return to a favorite nectaring spot or puddling spot. Then I approach very slowly. working to avoid moving any nearby vegetation, and try my best not to let my shadow fall on them (this really spooks most butterflies). It also seems to help to stay low - I usually crawl to ones that are puddling...

Great series Mole, and an interesting lesson again, it's nice to read your comments about the subjects.

......beautiful images!

Here (Arlington, TX) we've not seen many monarchs nor other butterflies this year, I miss them.
