Default Interesting Observation

I've not been around much recently, haven't had much time. But tonight I got out a camera and took some pictures. The camera was set to the default jpg setting (bright) and raw+ using dng for the raw format. Up until I got the Q I never shot raw +, but have been doing it a fair amount with the little cameras. Here I was going back to a dSLR and I got a little surprise when I looked at the two versions of the same picture. This picture is significantly cropped as well as resized, to make my point about the bright setting. The jpg version was just cropped and resized in CS6, no other processing. The dng was converted to jpg using the default settings for ACR, CS6 version, and without any profiles being applied (since there aren't any for the camera/lens combination I was using).

First, the jpg version:

And now the dng version, default settings and just cropped/resized:

The exif information should still be with the files if you are interested in ISO/aperture/shutter speed etc.

I think I'll continue to shoot raw+ for a while but have changed the settings to natural.

Wow! Quite a difference. I may try the same experiment with my K-5 just for kicks.

gjtoth - I'd be interested in the difference with your K5. I didn't notice a huge difference when I first got the K5 or the K7 and I don't think I changed the jpg settings to natural until later. So I was really surprised by the difference here - reminds me of the days of the bright (or equivalent) on the DS. That was so over-the-top as to be completely unusable. This isn't all that far behind.
