Default Good Red Eye

No ideas what this is-on Roosevelt Lake in Arizona-ist DS using DA 55-300. Similar to the loons I used to see on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.

Very nice picture of a Grebe. I think it's a Western.

Thanks-what is a Grebe? A type of duck or loon? As you can tell I am not a 'birder"

I don't know what the grebes are closer to (duck or loon) - I know they are a water bird. Certain varieties of grebes can be very frustrating to photograph - they dive and stay underwater for what seems like a long time, always surfacing somewhere else. I can't tell you how many pictures I have of blank water when trying to photograph them!

My nephew has a pontoon boat which is perfect for fishing-after a few hours with no fish I put down the fishing gear & got the camera-there was two or three of them about 30 feet from the boat

GREAT shot of a Western Grebe - just right exposure and sharpness, and excellent lighting as well. Must agree with Harriet that (at least our eastern species) are extremely shy and can swim underwater for rather long distances.

PS - for more information on these birds, you might want to check out:

Thanks everyone-went to your link Mole-seems like this bird and the common loon in New England are very similar.
