Default People of the St. Paul Winter Carnival

Since 1886, St. Paul Minnesota has celebrated winter with a festive Winter Carnival. It's build around the mythology of Vulcanus Rex, the fire king, and his Vulcans trying to overthrow King Boreas, who holds sway over winter.

King Boreas, with the Queen of the Snows behind his arm.

Vulcanus Rex, leading His minions in their fight against winter.

A Vulcan, "smudging" an innocent on-looker.

In the past the Vulcans wore heavy black greasepaint on their faces. They'd latch onto a woman and smudge her face with theirs. Finally the "PC Police" put a stop to it. Now they ask permission and "smudge" them with a greasepaint stick, if they get an OK.

Another Vulcan, declairing V for victory over winter.

Klondike Kate
Each year a new Klondike Kate is selected, reviving the bawdy saloon singers of the past (in a family friendly way) Due to demand past Klondike Kates also help with the entertainment.

Pictures were taken at the opening parade of the Winter Carnival, in 5 degree above temps. All involved proved they're very hardy troopers.

Back in the 1960's the St. Paul Winter Carnival used to open with a snowmobile race that was around 500 miles long and end at St. Paul.

Snowmobilers ...both Canadians and Americans would race their sleds from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to the finish line at St. Paul.

Your photos brought great memories of this race.

I used to watch it from my high school which was on the banks of the Red River of the North.

Thanks for reminding me. I'd forgotten about that race. As I remember, it was a sled dog race back in the early 1900s. Thanks for the comment.
