Default Pentax & Samsung in the same forum?

Is there a specific reason why these two are in the same forum?? Two completely different companies aren't they, or is there some 'tie' to one another??

It's because Samsung and Pentax made couple cameras with K mount together. K10D and Samsung GX10 were basically the same camera with different name on the front.

As gfurm mentioned, some of the Samsung and Pentax models were basically the same cameras.

Here's an old news article from October 2005, where Samsung and Pentax announced a partnership to jointly develop DSLR models:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/news/...al-slrs-3.html

When Samsung launched the GX-1s (it's first DSLR Model) in 2006, for most practical purposes, it was a rebadged Pentax *ist DS2

You'll see the same thing with the Samsung GX-1L, GX-10, and GX-20. They're basically the same cameras as some of the Pentax models. For example, the GX-10 and GX-20 are virtually identical to the Pentax K-10 and K-20.

The same thing applies to some of the Scheider branded K Mount lenses that Samsung sold with their DSLR models -- they appear to be the same as some of the Pentax branded lenses.

Later on, Samsung launched DSLR models using a different lens mount with their NX product line. But, the GX-xx series of DSLR models from Samsung are virtually identical to some of the Pentax DSLR Models.

Thanks for the input. It just seemed odd those two names were connected in any way.

I guess the question is, who actually manufactures the cameras?
Samsung makes a wide variety of products, I only know of Pentax and cameras.

Well, Jim, no offence but this forum is fading away. Can it, at least partly, be because it's not catered for? The Pentax/Samsung partnership is long gone, and the "sticky threads" at the top aren't exactly yesterdays news but quite a bit older than that. If we want this forum back kickin' it might be a good idea to keep it updated.

I got rid of the old sticky threads.

We used to have a lot of Pentax users posting on a regular basis, and this was one of our most active forums. But, the forum activity has slowly dwindled over time.

If you want it to be more active, I'd suggest inviting other Pentax users you know to post here, as a forum is only as good as it's members.

We provide a venue that lets users share information and photos with others. But, it's up to the members to post here.

Not to get too far OT, but regarding bilybianca's post, for example; the Panny thread has five 'stickies'. Four of them, the last (most recent) post from from 2010. The other 'sticky' last post from from 2011.
Shouldn't those be retired.

With this forum, how about splitting the two names into separate forums with links to the old forum and closing that?

Yep... I need to go through the stickies and get rid of the older ones that wouldn't apply any more.

As for splitting this forum, i don't see the point.

Again, for most practical purposes, the Samsung GX-xx models are the same cameras as some of the Pentax models, only with some differences in how the firmware works.

Samsung GX-1S = Pentax *istDS2
Samsung GX-1L = Pentax *istDL2
Samsung GX-10 = Pentax K10D
Samsung GX-20 = Pentax K20D

So, from my perspective, it's not very practical to have a separate forum for Samsung GX-xx model users, since questions they'd have about their cameras and lenses could be answered by Pentax users, and vice-versa. I would hope that Pentax and Samsung users of the same basic cameras with the same lens mount would want to help each other out (what lenses would work best for this shooting condition, etc.)..

Having too many forums makes it harder for users to figure out where to post, and makes it less likely that someone with an answer to their queries will see their posts and respond. We already have that issue now, with far too many forums for the amount of traffic they have, where some consolidation of them is probably needed (combining some of them, versus splitting them into even more forums).

For example, for some camera brands, we have a separate lenses forum for them. But, for others we don't, because the amount of traffic didn't warrant it. But, even with a lot of traffic, having a separate forum for lens issues makes it harder for members to figure out where to post, as asking questions about what lenses might work better for a given shooting condition could also be appropriate for the camera forum since differences in camera capabilities come into the equation.

That also can make it harder for members to get responses to questions, since some members may frequent a camera specific forum, but not visit the lens specific forum very often, when they're very much related to each other.

It's easier to check one forum you're interested in for new posts and content you may want to see and respond to, versus needing to check multiple forums to see that type of thing. Of course, the same thing applies when you want others to see your content, where the more forums that members have to look through, the less likely your post will get the attention you may want it to have.

It sounds as Samsung is making at least some of Pentax cameras.

Or, the other way around.

If you look at wikipedia articles, some imply that the Samsung GX-xx DSLR models are 90% Pentax, 10% Samsung (and if that's the case, then I'd also expect the equivalent Pentax Models to be 90% Pentax and 10% Samsung). . Look at the page about Pentax for an example of that:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax...nd_competition

But, they really don't quote a source for that info either; and the way camera and lens companies work, there's no telling what factories produce what components for those Pentax/Samsung DSLR models; as a lot of OEM manufacturing takes place, where one plant may be producing components for a lot of different brands.

Since Samsung is one of the largest manufacturers of electronic components, then it would make sense that some of their components were being used both before and after the Pentax/Samsung Partnership was formed. But now much is speculation, as it's tough to find any reputable sources for what really goes on "behind the scenes".
