Default Snowy Flint Rock

Holston Mountain is threaded by numerous trails which offer many options for enjoying both the views and the diverse habitats. Enjoyed a wintry 8 mile loop up to Flint Rock recently - it's about 1.5 miles nearly straight up the Flint Mill Trail, about 2.5 miles on the crest of the mountain along the Holston Mt Trail, about 2 miles nearly straight down the Josiah Trail, and then about 2 miles along the old Flatwoods Road (the only relatively flat part of the loop!)

Plan was to arrive well before sunrise, to give us time to get to the dawn view at Flint Rock. It took some steep uphill jogging to get there in time, but it was well worth the run.

Here's the view down towards South Holston Lake, with Clinch Mt in the background.

If you look carefully, you can see thin snow on the side of Holston High Knob.

This was the first snow of the season - no accumulations at all in the valley, and less than an inch here in the high country. Mountain Laurel leaves are great at catching snow.

Hemlock branches are also "snow magnets," and a fitting end to a fun mountain hike. Hope you enjoyed it too!

Those are very effective shots of the snow on the Mountain Laurel and the Hemlock "snow magnets."

Hiya, Mole! Up to your excellent images and narrative, eh? Haven't been around in quite a while so I thought I drop by and, lo & behold, there's some of your wonderful images.

Fog over the mountains shots are great.

Macbook - Thanks - glad you enjoyed them! That good old FA 50 macro does a nice job...

Very nice series Mole, but steep uphill jogging is not in my wheelhouse. Happy New Year to you and yours
