I am interested in a *ist DS but noticed that most zoom lens have f/5.6 towards the tele end. Is that too slow for handheld with *ist DS?

F4-F5.6 is common for consumer zooms. It is fine in sunlight and with a higher ISO selected. IMHO: Best option though is use a tripod:blah:
