i was at the store the other day trying to figure out how to shoot photos with mirror lock-up on the *ist d. is that function only available on *ist ds?

Im not sure you'd use it to take pictures while the mirror is up. When the mirror is up, you cant see anything through the view finder, and all camera options are not available until you turn the power off to click the mirror back down. Im pretty sure its used only to clean the sensor

Sajda,

Yes, I use it all the time for tele shots and macro stuff, you use the self timer 2 sec mode. Locks up mirror to stop camera shake and is very simple to do.

Oh if thats what you mean, the 2s timer i use all the time also, good at reducing that tiny bit of camera shake from depressing the shutter release. Fn -> up button, theres all the drive modes select 2s clock icon.
