I'm thinking of getting the ist*Ds for my first dslr. I can get the body only and since I may also need the zoom eventually, the supplier here is offering this lens for about $480. So what do you guys think? Is this worth it or is there a better alternative? What about the 18-55mm kit lens? ($100). I know I can these lenses cheaper on line but I try to avoid making online purchases with items like these.:?

Nols:

You asked this question in our Pentax Forum , which is the forum for the non-DSLR Pentax models (which can't use these lenses).

I've now moved this thread to our Pentax Digital SLR Forum , where you'll have a better chance of getting useful responses.

If this is the lens you are talking about:

Pentax SMC-FA Zoom 28-200/3,8-5,6 AL (IF)

then it does not test out very well from what I have read, but I have no personal experience with the lens.

Thanks Jim C/Tom. I've still to purchase the Ds though. Anyway, from what I've been reading here and the other forums, it seems that zoom lenses with smaller range perform a bit better than the bigger ones. Thanks for the help.

get the kit lens, it's a bargain at 100. then to further your reach get a sigma 70-300 APO for about 200. just got the sigma and it's a great lens. most that have it will verify this.

just be sure it's the APO model. sigma makes two in this range.

Thanks Robar. I've already decided to get the kit first.
