this is real simple. i used the ring light i made in order to see it at f16 and used a difussed flash for lighting.

the 16 LED light just does not give enough light for capturing w/out a tripod.

i'll be posting a thread on the 24 light LED soon. i've got all the holes drilled. now i just need to do the resistors and solder it all together.

Can a ring light be bought? I work 60+ hours a week, I just don't have the time.

Nope - Spend a LOT less money for the same sort of effect, but with fluorescent tubes:

The Samigon appears to be well-reviewed:

i looked and looked for a flo. tube but could not find one. you are not saving any $$ if you go this way. check the prices. anyway f2.8 at 1/32 is not enough. i'm getting w/the 16 LED light about 10x that and it's too slow. what i'm trying to acheive is 1/180, iso400, f11 at least. f2.8 has virtually no DOF and 1/32s is impossible to handhold at the macro level.

these were all shot with a rev. 50 at f11-16, 1/30s-1/90s. the speed is just too slow. the shots are quite impressive tho.
