Last time I purchased one (a Pentax PECS205 cable switch 205) was from B&H (www.bhphotovideo.com) for 34.95. I have used this cable switch much more then I thought I would ever use it. You may be able buy one cheaper but B&H is a very good place to buy this stuff on line. If you have to have it cheaper you may be able to make one yourself.

Just this week, I bought one at Adorama for $25. Works just fine. I was actually at the store, but I've dealt with them over the internet and been satisfied with each transaction.

I've seen some Chinese generic brand ones on ebay that are buy it now for about $10 less. There's not much to the cable release, so they should work. I opted for the Pentax version.

If you want to buy an extension, you can get one at Radio Shack (8' for $7 or 6' of their better quality for $14). It's sold as a headphone extension and it works.

How to they work with the Ds? Do they just clamp over the shutter and press it in or something, or are they the IR remote.

Just curious because the cable release I have for my dads old Ricoh, it actually screws inside the shutter release button.

I have a stainless steel braided one I've had sense the 70's. I don't know how much I paid for it but I've used it a bizillion times.

Doesn't the istD have a remote control option? I bought a remote for the istDS for$15. I had to have it to shoot fireworks last weekend.

I have the DS. To call it a cable release is a little misleading if you a use to the old manual cable release. It plugs in the side and the plug is the same size as the plug used on most cell phone headsets. I think you can even cut the headset off and use the mute button to trigger the camera. But the one from Pentax is better. It is bigger in your hand so you can hang on to it easily. You can press the button half way like on the camera and you can lock it for long bulb exposures. I use it a lot asit is handier then the button on the camera if you have it on a tripod.

You can get a IR remote release for the DS too. I have one. It is smaller then a car key remote. Is good for like 30,000 releases (then you are to send it back to Pentax to change the battery) and out to about 30 feet in front of the camera only. You have the put the camera in IF remote mode to use it and you don't get a half push like on the camera but you do get a setting for a 2 sec mirror lock up. Your not at the camera to look at what is says anyway. It is for if you have to be in front of the camera like in the photo or holding something. If I remember it was about $15 at B&H.

I have the remote. I shot the fireworks with it but I'm unfamiliar with it. Do you know how I can get the Pentax release for the DS?

I've been using the Chinese Canon knockoff on my Ds and it works just fine. Half press to meter and focus, full press to shoot, and it locks down for long exoosures with the camera set to BULB. <$15 delivered on ebay But It Now.
