I just got my first DSLR - the *ist DS. I got the kit lens, but am looking for decent 80 - 210 mm or 70/75 - 300 mm zoom lens for less than $200 US.
I like to go to sporting events and snap away.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Tamron 70-300mm DL. Got mine used at a local camera shop for $90. Shot baseball, football and soccer games with it. I am pleased with the results I got.

I picked up the 80-200 pentax f zoom for 90 new. It is very very slow (forget low light unlesss your at 1600+ iso but it is sharp, reasonably fast auto focus, andeven decent with a cheap teleconverter.

Pentax FA J 75/300 here. $129 at B and H. Great little general purpose lens thus far.

You can occasionally find a Pentax F (that's an F - not FA) 70-210mm f4.0-5.6 on ebay for around $150. Photodo rated it at 3.4 for sharpness, which is exceptional for that length zoom. The Tamron and Sigma lenses are usually around 2.4 to 2.9, just as a point of reference. The new Pentax DA 50-200 is getting really good comments, although there really aren't any technical reviews of it yet - and it costs about $225 - $250.

I got a Sigma 18-125 zoom with my Pentax. With the digital 1.5 increase in effective focal length it is quite usable in sporting situations.

I used it for the attached image

Thanks, guys. I ordered the Tamron 70 - 300 mm DL lens online. I think it was about $130 shipped. Later on, I may take other suggestions for a 3rd lens.

I hope to post some pictures when the new lens arrives.
