I just purchased the *ist DS and when I set the dial to anything other than M, the settings blink at 4000 with 27 aperature. The Takumar 28-80 AF lens is set to A. It doesn't change if I point in direct sunlight or indoors. Obviously, my pictures are totally dark. If I use M, I can force it to take visible pictures. Is there a setting I am missing or is it a malfunction on this camera?

I have the same problem with a Tamron 90-300 AF. I called Pentax and they told me to reset the camera. It now meters at 750-1000, 9.5-11 regardless of the light conditions. I took some pics, but they are all very underexposed. Pentax recommended sending it back to the retailer.

I'm in Houston. I was sending back to buydig.com in New Jersey (the land of real hot sauce) and their turn around is about 2 weeks. My concern is this could be a recurring problem on this camera. Are the LCD images bright on a properly functioning ist?

yes, mine is but you can adjust that in the menus. if you can get a replcement that's what i'd do. if not send it to pentax yourself. that's what buydig will do..

Buydig.com swapped the camera in just over 1 week turnaround. New camera works fine. Must have been a bad camera.
