I intend to switch from film to digital SLR, and my choice is going to Pentax as it would use the same SD card as my digicam, accept plain AA batteries and above all I would be able to use my 30 year old Pentax lenses I used with my MX.

I am hesitating between *ist DS and *ist DL, the second looking like a downgraded version of the first: three autofocus spots instead of eleven, less sensitive autofocus sensor, smaller buffer. But I am puzzled by the fact thatcurrently on the web in France the DL is more expensive than the DS.

I have not read yet a comparison of both models, only separate reviews of each model. Has any body an answer to my question ?

DS hands down.

The only thing i like better on the DL is the 2.5" LCD screen. Apart from that, the DL lacks some features the DS has.

DS is more expensive in Perth than DL. Some quotes for DS body only, compared to DL kit with lens.

You have to give up a proper pentaprism on the DS for a pentamirror on the DL.

Like Whisperingsquash says, the DS2 seems to be the best of both if you can wait. If not, I'd go for the DS

Having said that, the reduction in focus areas may not be an issue on the DL as many DS users (including me) use it in centre spot focus mode anyway (which can be moved around with the 4-way if needed).

I tryed out a DL in the shop where i got my DS the other day.

Heres everything i could remember about it:

Mirror viewfinder - ugh, horrible to look through
No high speed sync for flash - not a problem if you dont need to use a high speed flash
Personally it felt a bit heaver, but i could be wrong
(No pop up flash - dont quote me on that)

Some other things I cant think of at the moment.

For around $100 difference, and you cant wait for the new DS, get the DS.

In the final analysis, I honestly believe that the DS offers more value and greater photo potential. If you must have a bigger LCD, the wait for the DS2.

Thank you all for your answers. I think the choice is definitely DS.
