The M* and A* 300 lenses are also exceptional lenses, but even their prices are on the way up. If you find one for a reasonable price snap it up, especially the A*, which will allow metering automatically with Pentax digital SLR's.

Don't confuse these lenses with the M and no label 300mm Pentax K mount lenses, which are good lenses, but not in the same league with the others.

Although I am a neophyte whenit comes to photography I too have been tryingto take pictures of indoor hockey. I have an istD with 18-55mm lens. So far I have had my best success shooting all manual: shutter speed at 180, fully open aperture and widest angleand focused at infinity. I then crop the pictures on the computer and lighten as necessary. I am looking for a fixed focal length lens with a wider aperture than 3.5 or 4.5 to increase my light and and lower my ISO (currently at 800, sometimes 400).

Since I also play rat hockey I actually go out on the ice during "games" to get closer to action.

letnac - great choices, those are pro quality lenses at bargain prices. I may try some hockey shots at a high school game here sometime, would a 135mm f2.8 be too short (or long) to get some decent shots?
