i know a lot of people have a sigma 70-300 f4-5.6
lots of people use this lens. there are 3 versions of it. i've got the APO model and while it's not the best, the price is right.

edit: the kit lens is a pretty good lens also.
the sigma above will also do 1:2 ratio macros.

Depends on what you use it for ...

Wide angle the to normal 14-45 worked well for me.

Remember you have to multiply by 1.5.

You wont go far wrong with the kit lens @ 18-55mm as it covers most situations &with good close up capability as well.

One last suggestion, the Sigma APO 70-200mm F 2.8 EX DG. The extra stop of lens speed will help in focusing speed and accuracy as well as allow higher shutter speeds at the hockey games. A student of mine had this lens in Canon mount for his 20D and it was incredibly sharp. Another option is the older non-DG version which may be a little larger but is available cheaper. This is a pro quality lens which is somewhat heavy but very good.

that is a simply amazing lens but you can find a used F*300 or FA*300 for a similar price.

The price of F* and FA* lenses has gone through the roof in the last week or so, with the last FA* 300 going for over $1,000 US on ebay. There is no comarison to the 70-200 and a 300 prime lens, the prime will be sharper, but not as versital as the zoom and not a usable in low light.

I have both lenses and they each do something better than the other.

The Sigma used, should be much less than the FA* 300 and will be a better performer inside in low light.

ah!! tom
you've noticed that also. but,,,, there have been 2 m* 300mm f4 that have gone for a reasonable price.. i had a feeling the 85mm f1.4 was going to go over a grand and it did.. what got me was the kiron 105mm that went into a bidding frenzy.
