Was advised by my local Pentax dealer that there is a new camera coming at 18 or 22mp.

Will be badged Samsung and that Pentax will bow out of digital camera production but still manufacture lenses.

Not what I wanted to hear really. :?

In all liklihood the new 18-22 MP camera he's talking about is going to be the medium format Pentax 645 Digital talked about here:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/diginews.html#pentax_mf

After what Konica-Minolta just did I'd believe just about anything, but the attached article dicusses how Pentax will soon be announcing new, high end digital SLR's. I'd be more enclined to believe an article like the one above rather than the guessing of a sort-of-but-not-really-in-the-know dealer.

From what I have read, it seems that Pentax/Samsung are taking a different approach from KM/SONY, and the Pentax name should be carried on. There may be Pentax cameras in some markets and Samsung in others, but the cameras are all Pentax optically and mechanically with the possible future inclusion (inevitable?) of Samsung electronics. I do not see this as a bad thing, and I might add that Samsung may be fine for badging the 35mm based DSLRs but the medium format cameras should be Pentax since ithas been avery respected medium format company (6X7, 67 and 645).

Just a totally unsubstantiated opinion by the way.

Hello Ira;

Ultimatly, I agree with you.... Optically, Pentax was once the Asahi Optical Company. Some of the very best lenses very made.....

But, they have decided to compete...

The high-end MF (645d) willbe ready for photokina.Several other Pentax-DSLRswill come this year too (from low-end DL to "upper DS")

In addition we expect to see k-mount-news from Samsung: GX-1s & L in march (=pentax) and second half of the year (photokina?) at least one Samsung-developedk-mount DSLR with 10 MPx and end of the year/ next year several Schneider k-mount-lenses are expected.....

So, doesn't look like pentax / k-mount will die in the next future
