Sigma has two zoom 500mm lenses that might fit the bill for my next purchase.

Sigma APO 170-500mm F5-6.3 DG (about $900Aus)

or

Sigma APO 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX DG (about $1500Aus)

Obviously the 50-500 has more zoom, but at what cost?

Lastly the 170-500 is about 65% the price of the 50-500.

Has anyone tried these lenses, is the 170-500 sharper because of the reduced requirementof zoom range??

Don't know if the picture quality varies between the 2 lenses, but I'd opt for the 170-500. I would bet that 90% of the photos taken with a long lens would be at the long end. I only have a 50-200, but over 90% of my shots taken are at 200mm shooting wildlife. $600 less would be an incentive too. Google the 2 lenses and how they test out. Hope this helps a little.........thekman.

I am leaning towards the 170-500, kind of liked the idea of the extra bottom end.

I already have the 70-300, the 18-125 and a 24mm prime and I want that extra reach of the 500mm.

Googling give me a lots of ebay references, will see how we go.

Thanks

I have the Sigma 50-500mm. Very pleased with it.* *One puts the camera on the lens!!! Also known as "Bigma" and has a well-deserved following. Got mine off Ebay, new, from the States.

I took these photos with a 170-500, and you can judge for yourself.
