Payed $499 at Costco with the kit.

I want either the Pentax 50-200 or the Sigma 70-300 APO.

Just a good telephoto lens.

Which do you recommend?

Is there a big difference between 200 and 300 as far as range?

If I use the maximum zoom on either lens will it lose quality?

I am a beginner.

Thanks.

I have the 70-300 and I think it is great and nice and sharp.

The 50-200 allows you that extra bit wider and you might find that more appropriate.

I already had a 24mm prime and a 18-125mm for the wider lenses, so that is why I went with the 70-300.

Check ebay, you will find 100-300mm and 70-300mm quite regularly.

I would get the DA 50-200 its optically a great lens through out its reach... plus for a 200mm lens its size is tiny so it wll be with you when you need it.

Hi

I agree with "Crashman" I also Own the Sigma 70-300MM DG APO. Great lense.
I dont think you will Go wrong with either lense! In my case i love to Shoot at Air Shows and Auto Racing, So for me the more range the better.
Also Like "Crashman" I have not only the kit lense, but a Pentax 28-105 So i have all the grounds covered.
If you should deciede to go with the Sigma, Price it at Sigma4 Less. Better prices than B & H and i have had no problem With them.

how is the sharpness on the sigma 70-300 DG APOfrom all focal lengths? will it lose some quality above 200? that would be my only concern with going with the sigma over the pentax 50-200. people have said the 50-200 retains its quality all around. thanks.

These two were taken at the local zoo, both are with my 100-300 Sigma at 300mm. Personally I don't think there is an issue with sharpness at 300mm. The monkey shot was through dirty glass as well.
