Hello all,

I have just bought a sigma 28-300mm film lens to use with my Pentax *ist DL, for a very good price on eBay.I believe this will act as a 44-470mm lens when used with my DL?

So I would like if possible to get some kind of device that would make the lens behave as a 28-300mm lens.

Is this possible? Is there some sort of device that could do this?

Many thanks in advance?

Since you are talking about cropping the image to the amount covered by a 44-470mm lens because of the smaller sensor in the D series Pentax cameras there is no way to fix that problem. The lens remains a focal length of 28-300mm and these smaller sensors are not able to use the entire coverage the lens is capable of and you are stuck with that issue.

That is where the crop factor becomes a real problem, which is why I got the kit lens with my DS so I would have true wide angle capabilities. Film lenses work great on the D series Pentax cameras, but they are limited on the wide angle side.

There is no way to fix the actual lens, but there are other lenses. I also bought a kit lens, the 16–45 mm, with my DS body and that give me a 24 mm eq. Few were those who used a wider angel than that in the film camera era. A 17–40L lens will give you less (or more, if you count mm's). I'm quite happy with what I have.

The 18-200mm Sigma would have been a better choice (too late now I guess) since it would be the equivalent of 27mm to 300mm.

I use a Raynox 0.7 wide angle converter (52mm thread to mount to the filter threads) on my 18-55mm kit lens to cancel the crop factor and give me atrue 18mm field of view. The barrel distortion is easily corrected in PSP 8 or PSP X using the lens correction tools. The Raynox brand is very high quality and available on ebay for c. $60US. Beware of the Opteka brand converters you'll see there.

Also, don't step down to a thread size smaller than the filter size of your lens as severe vignetting is possible. Either match the filter size or step up with an adapter to a larger size. The quality of the images shot with this rig is really quite good.

Hope this helps,
Lou
