Just a note, when I use the FA* 80-200mm 2.8 for things like the hummingbird, even though it is a great lens and sharp even at 2.8, I am always thinking, "if I had my FA* 300 on I would have a much closer image".

If you are going to spend the cash to get a FA* lens, get the 300 f/4.5 as it is the best of the bunch.
