I purchased a Tamron SP 500mm F/8 lens at a garage sale. The lens itself appears to be very clean but the glass element at the rear of the screw on sun shade is very dirty and the coating appears to be discolored.

Is ths element protective only? In other words could I just remove it if I can't get it clean?
Thanks

sounds like there is a filter installed. what's the rim of ''the attached lense'' say??

if it's not permanently installed then it's probably a filter.

The glass (I won't call it a lens) IS permanently attached. It appears you need some sort of specializes tool that would fit in two small slots to unscrew it. There is "28FH" on the rim of the shade near the glass element. I am guessing it is a protective filter, but am not positive.

doing some research, it appears this may be part of the lens hood. am i correct?? if so then it is a filter and you do not need it.

if it's attached to the lense itself and it doesn't just screw off then it's necessary.

sorry, i did not see that the extra wording in the title states that the glass is part of the hood. no, you do not need it. this is why i try never to post something other than a title, subject. it's too easy to miss and does not show up when you clik the link.
