Hey there.

Just got my hands on a old Pentax f/1.7 Prime lens and had a go with it today, was the first day for a week to have sun which is very uncommon in Sydney.

Anyway, I was more interested in playing with the wide open apeture and doing a few sharpness test.

For an old lens (30 years old) it performs quite admirabley.

This is what it looks like, ignore the dust on it.

No tripod

100% crop, no photoshop besides border

Cropped and Resized, no post processing.

First impressions were that f/1.7 is evil :G

Only in sunlight though, but once bumped up a bit to f/8 or so it's a pleasure to use.

Your comments and views are appreciated.

Chris.

Very nice - love the blurred backgrounds.

Definitly more control and sharpness with the older lenses.

I bought this lense on eBay, I can't wait for it to arrive.
I got the M version, I'm not to sure what the difference is, Im a n00b at this :?
Only problem is I've been waiting over 3 months for it to arrive!!
Apparently it was returned to the seller in Germany (im in Australia) and she 'said' she resent it.
Not too sure what to do, getting on for 4 months is crazy, I want my lense :?

The M version you ordered is one of the older, manual lenses. Both my 50mm prime lenses are M versions (I have a 1.4 and a 1.7), and both are excellent. I don't have so much problem with the manual focus as I do remembering to push the AE-L button to stop down the lens so the camera can properly meter at whatever f stop I selected on the aperture ring. It's a good thing I'm shooting digital - I'd hate to pay for developing all those "ooops" pictures.

mtngal (can I call you Harriet?) I have the same issue with the older lenses, forgetting to push the button. My focusing skills are also in question however.

Ira - Yes, anyone can call me Harriet, I don't mind at all. I always forget to add it on the bottom of my posts.

I'm not as good focusing as I used to be, but still not too bad. If I have a really small DOF I don't always get what I want perfectly in focus (the reason I didn't use the several short distance photos I took when I was comparing these lenses and using their widest aperture). I've found that the camera does a pretty good job of telling you when you are in focus, and I depend on that now.

I found the focusing a bit off to be honest, the camera would beep when it wasn't (from my eyes atleast) in focus.

I take the beep as a guide with manual lenses, but I trust my eyes a lot more.

But I am more than happy with the lens, this small DOF is making my photo's take a new turn in style.
