As I stated before, I'm new to all this stuff, so I'm a little confused about all this authomatic aperture thing.

I was wondering how you could tell when an old lens has the ability to have automatic aperture on the *ist DL?

Often they specify the mount, being K, PK/A, KA, A, or whatever...can anyone tell me which one's have the automatic aperture setting?

I've seen ebay auctions where they state that it's automatic on "Program A" camera's, but not on the *ist DL!

The reason I'd like to know is because I've got a few lenses that caught my eye on ebay, and I'd like to know if they're manual/automatic aperture, since metering with stopping down seems a little hard for a beginner.

If anyone can tell me specificly, these are the 4 that I'm curious about:

A nice & compact tele-zoom I'd like to take on trips:

A Vivitar Series 1. Heard a lot of good stuff about these. But do they have automatic diaphragm?

One with a little more macro power to it...but read the remark...I dont get it...
"Will also fit most Pentax AF cameras, for manual focusing and aperture priority or manual exposure with auto diaphragm and full aperture metering. Compatible models include the SFX (SF1), SFXn (SF1n), SF7, Z-1 (PZ-1), PZ-1 (PZ-1P), Z-10 (PZ-10), Z-20 (PZ-20), Z-70 (PZ-70), MZ-3, MZ-5 (ZX-5), MZ-5n (ZX-5n), MZ-6 (ZX-L), MZ-7 (ZX-7), MZ-10 (ZX-10) and MZ-S.

The exceptions are the MZ-50 (ZX-50) and *ist, which require KA or AF lenses for all metering modes, so could only be used in manual mode with a separate meter, and the MZ-30 (ZX-30) and MZ-60 (ZX-60) which will NOT work at all with PK lenses and accessories."

And a cheap as heck Hoya.

Any answers to my aperture-problem? Or maybe suggestions between those lenses?

Thanks.

ok, if it's a K mount lens then it is mechanically linked to the aperture. K & M lenses will auto close the aperture but you have to hit the AE-L button to close down the lens so the cam can make a exp. setting.

the A lenses when set on A will let you set the ap. and it will auto set the exp to the correct time.

the F & FA lenses will auto focus and set the correct time for ap you have chosen.

all screw mount lenses have to be preset to the stopped down ap and the cam will set the time.

hope this helped,

your lens choices== 1 2 are manual K mount and are ok lenses

no.1 good lens but i'd look for the pentax A70-210 f4. one of my best. 1:4 macro.

no. 2 another great series1 vivitar. it does not say and i don't know if it's an A lens. i have it's macro brother 1:1 105mm f2.5 and it's legendary. i'm sure you'd love it. i've no experience with it as i have w/ the pentax 70-210. at 70mm tho it's a full stop faster than the pentax.

both of these will allow full aperture viewing and man focus. you may need to hit the AE-L button tho.

i'd stay away from 3 & 4.
