I cannot afford the 2.8 nor the FA* version.
Well sort of settled with this teleprime. I have also to relearn manual focus for A lens. Looks I should be able to manage that.

daniel, if this is an example of relearning then you've taken to it like a fish in water..

Roy,

Actually I have been cheating.
It goes like this. Shooting in Av, I press the shutter and turn the focus ring until it clicks and fires. That is all. It is not that I focus and press the shutter.
Manual lens is entirely different ball game for my eyesight.
DL viewfinder has not been that helpful at all.

Its a little green square in the viewfinder, along with the beep.

I never thought of focusing like that... I will try it tomorrow when the sun comes back up.

I mainly use manual focus lens but the autofocus system, as Robar points out, is still there to be used.

There are two indications on my DS in the viewfinder for focus, I turned the Beep off as it as annoyed me.

The red sqare in the image area indicates the point the system is using to determine focus.

Along line of indicators below the image in the viewfinder there is a six sided figure that indicates that the image point where the red square is is in focus.

There has been reported that older firmware may not support the focus trap. Hope you are ok.
Looks like I was overworrying about focusing.
A new one I just took this morning

That's interesting - my DS is green and didn't change when I updated the firmware. I've never set out to use the focus trap, but know that mine works because I've done it accidentally once or twice. Most of the time when I'm manually focusing, I ignore the square and concentrate on what I'm seeing. Don't know if that improved my pictures or not.
