I have Pentax cameras (K1000 and *istDS) and an almost useless F8 500mm mirror lens "Made in Korea":-) So I have been on the look out for a fast telephoto, there was a Sigma f=400 f5.6 in our local junk shop for months, in a glass case right between the used leather jackets and the (un)used fitness equipment! Only problem was it had what I think was a Minolta mount and it was just a little too expensive for something that was clearly un-loved, dirty and no case or whatever.

Eventually the price came down and I paid a few dollars for it, took off the mount and fitted a 'K' flange from a teleconverter that deserved to die. Despite initial fears I get focus to infinity but I did have to sacrifice the aperture control and of course the auto focus I didnt even try to match up with the *istDS body.

Example of what I have managed with ithere in full size!

Very nice. If only we could all make such finds!

Nice photo, John!

That's great shopping and craftmanship.

It is lunch time here, Monday, and the sun is shining. I know where a gaggle of feral geese have a camp near the gold course in easy walking distance. Wish me luck!

john,
i'm a DIYer. how about some photos of the beginning and end of the project??
oh, 99% of all 2X converters deserve to die. however!! without the glass they make good extension tubes for macro work.

speaking of tubes, i just right now picked up an auto set for $15 , ebay , delivered..
thank you dsmith..

That's what I call a good cost/benefit quota. The art of getting something for nothing by using your brains and skills. :idea:I wouldn't even have given it a thought!

Does this mean you can only use the widest aperture, or...???

Yes, I can only use the widest aperture although if I wish I could uncouple from the camera and move the diaphram by poking a pen into the rear of the lens. I did try to bring a manual control of the aperture to the outside but the extra distance cost me infinity focus, perhaps I could revisit this subject one rainy week end day!

I'm confident it's only a question of time before you work something out:idea:.
