Picked up a Bogen 3026 midi ball head off ebay to replace my rather flimsy, no-name pan head. The 3026 is nice and steady...

does it have the ball head drop? once you lock it in does it drop just a hair once you set it? i know the 50-200 is a nice lite lens. have you tried it with a long heavy lens?? this image is not up to par compared to what you usually post. a little OOF perhaps??

I haven't had a chance to try the head with a heavy lens (I probably will try it this weekend with my Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f3.5). With the DA 50-200 I didn't notice any drop after I locked it in place. A slight drop wouldn't bother me much--compared to what I had been using, it has to be a huge improvement. I paid less than $50.00 for it (with Quick Release).

As far as the image, I just didn't have much time to play with it last night...

roy,

i know what you're saying. i have the 3262 mid sized ball head and it worked great with the s602 but the drop drove me nuts when i used it with the dl and 70-300. now it's on the shelf and i'm back to my old 3 way pan/tilt head.

the 70-300 wasn't bad. the A*300 is about a pound of front element. it's impossible practically.

The Vivitar series 1 weighs over a pound and is very long, so I'll see how much drop I get with the new ball head. I still have one old tripod that weighs as much as I do (of course I weigh less than 30 pounds) and I am in the process of adapting a quick release mechanism to its pan head. I think I could have one of my kids hang on the end of a telphoto lens while its mounted on this one and it wouldn't budge. What I like about the head of this one is that it is set back pretty far from the end of the camera mount, so the weight is kind of counter-balanced (part of the lens is actually over the legs of the tripod).

One other option may be to get one of the lens supports that bogen sells...

I don't "hike" much, so tripod weight isn't the big issue for me.

When I have the adaptor completed, I'll post a photo.
