i know that programs cost money. you'll usually pay a minimum of 90usd for a full fledged graphics program. here's a couple that will cost you nothing except some d/l time. my advise to all is get a program and stick with IT. quit bouncing around with a lot of them. that way you never learn very much..
first one is paint.net under developement by washingtone state univ.
it has a photoshop feel and is free..
http://www.getpaint.net/index.html

second one is 'the gimp'. many have heard of it. there are at least 2 versions of it.
http://www.gimp.org/

then there is the gimp shop, which has a photoshop feel.
http://www.plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241

all 3 of these are almost as powerfull as photoshop. upgrades are free. there are many free tutorials online for all of them.. expect, as with any hi-end program, a steep learning curve.

enjoy,
roy

Roy,

Thanks for the links. I will check them out. Are any of the three mentioned better than the other two? Jay

I use Graphics Converter, which isn't exactly free ($29), but it is the closest thing to Photoshop I have found and it will open files nothing else will. Actually it was free with my latest OSX version, but not the Pro version.

Graphics Converter PRO
v6.60 Build 60708 An easy-to-use and powerful batch graphics converter and image viewer. Support 500 graphic formats, and the version v7.x supports vector images.

i have been using GIMP for years
(so it cant be that hard lol)
and with UFRaw i can bring my pentax raw files directly into GIMP
and the GIMP community is pretty helpful and friendly (much like this group:-))

Another inexpensive alternative is Paint Shop Pro. Version 10 can currently be had for $30 or less. There will probably be another release this fall. The upgrade will probably be cheaper than buying the newer version.

It now has many 16 bit functions and a few great things that not even PS has (Red eye removal, great noise reduction, clarify tool). PSP's one big shortcoming is not-so-great color management.

I don't know if this would be of any use to anyone but Creature House Expressions is a free vector art program that is compatible with .jpg, ..bmpand .tif. It might not be something photographers use (or it might,I am still too new to this) but I mention it because I know my daughter uses it interchangably with GIMP to create art on her graphics tablet.
