Hello,

I just ordered a *ist dl and expect it early next week.

What affordable (50-200) lense used or new is a good compliment to the kit lenses?

I have been reading the forums and it looks like this one is very popular.

SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.4 or Manual.

Pardon my nubbishness

Thanks,
Brian

welcome to the forum.

i'd suggest the pentax DA 50-200 to start with. learn the cameara and these two lenses and decide later what you want to get.

also, remember, the only stupid, dumb question is the one you don't ask..

You wont go far wrong with the Pentax 50-200mm DA.

It's light and produces great results.

All these shots were taken using it:

I will chime in and add my affirmation for the Pentax 50-200mm lens. I have had it for over a year now and it is an amazing, but inexpensive lens.

Here is a sample from that Pentax 50-200mm lens.

I also bought the DA 50-200 because I wanted something sharp and light. Its been all that - definitely a good buy. Up until I bought it, my all-time favorite lens was anF70-210 that broke, and the DA 50-200 has made me forget how much I missed that lens.

It sounds like the 50-200 is a good compliment to the kit lens. I think that would be a good lens to buy, BUT... I would still buy one of the 50mm primes. I have a SMC-M 50mm f/1.4 and it is my most used lens, its excellent for portraits. The SMC-A version will work better with the metering system and various camera mode(M lenses can really only be used in the M mode). You wont have autofocus, but the camera will still beep when it thinks its in focus(center point only).

I would recommend you the DA 50-200 too, if you can afford it.

I've heard nothing but good things about it on here.

Here's an example of it's price on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=110015509098
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=330004768898

You'll be able to find more if you search a little longer.

There's also some good Tokina's, Sigma's and Tamron's out there, should you think the DA 50-200 is too expensive.

Now for a prime, personally I wouldn't start by buying one. The first few weeks you'll have your hands full exploring your camera and AF comes in real handy while doing that. Also with the DA 18-55mm (kit lens) and DA 50-200mm you got a great range covered, and I think you'll be good for a while

After that, when you get to know your camera better, then you can always find a good 50mm prime on ebay.

:-)

Thanks for all the great input and the sample pic with the big Pentax lenses!

The people here are really nice and willing to share it seems.

On the lenses..

Well, I got excited and picked up a couple of used lenses on ebay. It looks like any purchase ofthe new 50- 200mm may have to wait. Maybe I can ask for one of those for Christmas

EDIT I may be in hot water at home when those lenses start coming in :O

Welcome to the forum :-)

What lenses did you buy? :|

And it appears you LBA, we all have it in some form and I personally am not in denial, I freely admit to buying lenses without really needing them, other than to try and take the best pics I can.

I don't own one but I certainly am impressed with what I see from the DA 50-200mm. If I decide to purchase more lenses this would be near the top of my list.
