Ok, for the first time ever, I went out and shot in raw. I installed the Gimp but it doesn't open raw files, grrr and the pentax photo laboratory is rubbish.

Can anyone recommend a free program for my raw files?

Thanks

Try this "Raw Shooter essentials". Although Pixelmatic has been purchased by adobe.

RSE is still avilable and in my opinion a Great program

Rubbish?

GIMP will work with raw files if you install the ufraw plug-in which you can download for free.

I use Picasa by Google--lmited functionality, but more than adequate for my needs. Most of all, very intuitive and simple! It opens RAW and JPEG images so there is no need to use to editors. Jay

Alison - Many people are using Silkypix which is what the new raw converter pentax is shipping with the K100D is based on, at least the Silkypix engine part of it. You can use the full blown addition for 2 weeks and then it reverts back to a more limited free edition, but still very ample for most needs. I tried RSE, but like the color rendition in Silkypix better. Everyone seems to have there favorite though- Bruce

As a footnote, the new Pentax Photo Lab V3 will be available free to the public as a download on there site after August 8th. I may give it a try, but I have gotten use to the Silkypix interface. I haven't heard how any of the people that have gotten the K100D have liked the new version 3.

Thanks everyone for all the possible downloads. I've tried a couple, am finding it really strange and difficult but the one I seem to be getting along with best at the moment is the Raw Shooter Essentials, seems the easiest one so far.

I will post a couple of pics to show you in due course, need to practice first though! lol!

Thanks again for all the help.

Also don't forget about the new version of Photo Lab with the SilkyPix engine. I remember reading somewhere that Pentax was making it availableon August 8th for everybody. Unfortunately I can't find the post where I read it.It was either here or Dpreview. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Take picture of something red and watch how this red will become orange in RawShooter Essentials... RawShooter *needs* Colour Engine plugin to display colours correctly.
