I guess I was pretty lucky with regard to having a sense of history. As a kid, we took marathon 6 week vacations in an old '55 Nomad wagon. My dad built a top carrier that doubled as a bed (my brother and I slept up top and my folks slept in the back of the wagon). We would alternate by years--for example, one year we would head east and visit Nat'l parks and Civil War battlefields, the next we would head west and go to Yellowstone or The Painted Desert. By the time I was eight or nine, I knew as much if not more about American History as did my elementary school teachers. I have hundreds of slides my dad took on these trips, and I work a bit on scanning them to preserve them for my kids.

I wish traveling was less expensive, and I feel kind of guilty that I haven't done the same thing with my kids.

The good thing is that I can say I've been to every state except Alaska and Hawaii--and I hope to get to these before I die.
