Looks like an orchid, but I can't find it in any of my books...

No orchid. Lamiaceae family (the Salvia family), Physostegia genus.

Physostegia virginiana. English name False Dragonhead or Obedience Plant, according to my South African "What Flower is That?" by Kristo Pienaar.

Native to eastern and central North America. There are a number of cultivated varietes.
