I agree with BK. I use the Pentax FA 28-105MM 3.2-4.5 on my DL and am very happy with it

Thanks for the info. I'm generally looking for lenses not much more expensive than $200. I'd like to be able to fill out my range with a few reliable zooms (I already have the sigma 70-300mm apo) and sprinkle in a few nice primes (looking to get an FA 50mm f/1.4) to take better quality shots when it really counts - assuming I can anticipate when it will really count .

I agree with Ira - just received my Sigma 24-135, and I got a good one! Cameta is selling them on eBay for about $115 shipped (US)

Very nice lens, fairly heavy, but seems to be very versatile for a non-prime lens

$115? holy cow. I had gone to sigma's site to look at their array of lenses and I thought they had that one msrp'd at around $500 or so. I will have to check again - there are so many flavors of lenses and they are not always posted on a company's website.

looks like a tough choice: the sigma 24-135 can be had for about $115 while the pentax 28-105 (f3.2-4.5) is a little over $200.

thing is, several reviews - mostly user reviews - have said negative things about the sigma, like it being unusable at full wide angle and f2.8, and that it performs poorly in low light, even with flash. It's also been said it's a great value for the "$300" price - which implies it's an even greater value at $115!

However, I could find only positive remarks about the pentax lense - some user reviews and some formal. the gist was that the lense is solid throughout its range. Adding to this, the pentax appears to be much lighter than the sigma.

Anybody here had experience with both? I might be leaning toward the pentax, but saving $100 would also be nice.

thanks

I want the pentax 28-105mm f3.2-4.5 aswell, but I simply can't spare the extra money.

So I'm probably going to go for the Tamron 28-105mm f4-5.6
http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/28105f4mm_lg.asp
, heard good things about it and according to reviews it's trustworthy + it has 0 distortion at 50mm, according to this site: http://perso.orange.fr/Photo-hh/fich...ges/33112.html

Does anyone know anything about the 28-200 mm from tamron? it's listed at 514$, and can be had on ebay for little over 100$...

My most used walk-around lens is FA50mm 1.4. Occasionally, FA28 mm 2.8. Zoom is obviously more convenient. But it is an engineering compromise and to an extent suffers in quality.
So it is convenience versus quality - take what you prefer most.

I'm interested in getting a decent walk around lens in the 18mm-ish - 100mm-ish range. I think Ira had mentioned before he was happy with what he generally used in that range, but I forget what that lense was. Any good recommendations?

I would like this lens to replace my DA 18-55mm. Thanks!
