IMHO it all depends on the kind of photos that you like to take. Like Harriet, I used the Pentax 50-200mm lens as my walk-around lens for a good while. Then when I wanted to get a whole bunch of wide angle shots to use in my workshops, I began using an old Promaster 19-35mm lens, and got some great examples. Lately, I have been using the Pentax kit lens, the Pentax 18-55mm lens and I like that too.

So understand, please, that your so called walk around lens choice may not be carved in stone, at all. It may vary from day to day.

I got mine before Cameta set a minimum price, paid about $75US.

They have set a minimum to $99, but you can purchase the lens through Amazon and pay less shipping (presumably the higher shipping through eBay would be to cover eBay's listing fees).

Just search for the lens on Amazon, go to the button that says "x available used and new" and Cameta is listed there selling them for $99 + $8 or $9 shipping. Other sellers are selling the lens for about $360. Based on Ira's previous comments regarding this lens, I ordered one a few days ago ... can't wait for it to get here.

my first more-or-less nice photo w/ dSLR, I have used Sigma 24-135 (cropped & image size reduced in Adobe Photoshop CS2 to ~1000x600, "resample image: bicubic sharper")
