I have my K100d on the way with the 18-55 and 50-200 lenses. I would like to add at least one more zoom right off the bat to get out a little further. Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent lens that zooms out the 300?

Looking at Keh.com I see:

70-300 F4-5.6 SIGMA DL MACRO

70-300 F4-5.6 SIGMA DL MACRO SUPER

70-300 F4-5.6 TAMRON LD TELE-MACRO

75-300 F4-5.6 SIGMA DL MACRO

100-300 F4.5-6.7 SIGMA DL

100-300 F5-6.3 TAMRON TELE-MACRO

Pentax 80-320 F4.5-5.6 SMC FA SILVER

Pentax 100-300 F4.5-5.6 SMC FA

and Pentax 100-300 F4.7-5.8 SMC FA SILVER

Cameta has:

Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 Macro Super II

Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 LD Macro

Tamron 28-300 f3.5-6.3 XR

My main use for this lens would be in the 200mm+ range so quality fully zoomed is my top interest. If one of the actually also functioned as good macro that would be a plus. Any of these could fit into my budget. I assume a 100-300 lens would be best as I have learned that the wider the zoom range the more compromised the lens is. I appreciate your thoughts and input.

Thanks,

With this winning pair I'd suggest that you go for a 300 mm prime instead.

i second that.
if i am correct the best bang for the buck is either an M* or K 300mm.
but lately even those have gone up and very little supply for the pricey FA* or F*300mm 4.5.
And I am not talking about those F2.8 one heavy glass.

I agree with Kjell, however I will put in one plug for the Pentax 100-300 F4.7-5.8 SMC FA SILVER , it is a very light cheap lens but it takes surprizingly good pictures. An F* or FA* 300mm f4.5 would be the killer lens to own in that category but it will cost you ( the monster FA* 300mm f2.8 would be a little large and even more expensive, if you can find one). I believe Sigma and Tamron also made some nice 300mm primes that may be more affordable.

Ira

BTW here is a shot, hand held, with the Pentax 100-300 F4.7-5.8 SMC FA SILVER, shot at 300mm.

Another possibility is the Pentax SMC-A* 200 mm 2.8 and the 1.7 AF Teleconverter, or of course any TC ifautofocus is not important to you. I have this lens and a 2X TC, which gives me a 400 mm 5.6, handholdable (well, nearly). This combo is for sale on ebay right now (not mine, even though the seller is from Sweden. Don't know him.)

Thank you all for your input. Ira, that pic certainly looks good enough for me! I do intend to add some primes as I go, starting withthe SMC A 50/1.7 that I have heard so much about, but an inexpensive zoom will have to do to start with. Thank you all again for helping this noob out.
