I am sorry, I know I just asked one lens question and I am already asking another. While searching for a longer zoom I noticed that Cameta has the Pentax SMC 28-80 lenses in FA trim for $25 and FAJ trim for $20. This very low price for a genuine Pentax lens seems suspect. I can't find any reviews about this lens on the web.

If this is a good lens I figure I will pick one up to play with, it might be handy to have a lens that covers the middle ground of the two kit lenses. I thought I would ask just in case these have a terrible reputation or cause unplanned pregnancies or something :-).

Thanks,

Nonentity

Thanks Roy,

I did check that site already (got it bookmarked). I guess I should have specified that these are the f/3.5-5.6 and there are no reviews there for that lens.

There is another site for Minolta mount lenses at

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp

that I have been looking at. Would I be correct in assuming that Sigma, Tamron, Vivitar, etc lenses for different mounts are basically the same despite the different mounts? Basically that the quality or lack thereof of a particular second tier lens will be basically the same no matter what mounting system it has?

Thanks,

NonEntity

Nonentity, The FA lens isn't bad, not great but definitely worth that price. Stay away from the FAJ, very cheaply constructed. It may be fine optically but it is not very well made.

Ira

Here is a sample from my FA 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 silver. shot at 80mm

And thank you again Ira. It looks to me like this lens is plenty capable for me to start learning on and for that price I really can't go wrong. I can't speak to the lens yet but I would sure call that PIC great!
