My "other" Hobby is restoring old fountain pens. I've always been struck by the gorgeous plastics used on early writing instruments (and a very, very few modern ones)

Nice shot. You picked the pretty ones. I inherited an over 50 year old Parker 51 set from my father. They work great and are truly boring looking - gold cap, purple body.

Very nice! Unexpected motif, composition and colours very appealing.

But since this is a repeatable situation - could you make a try, with the camera on a tripod,to take a small aperture shot for increased DOF? I think thepens deserve sharpness at both ends. Was the unsharpness at the near end intended?

No, I just happened to have the pieces out and decided to snap a picture in less than great lighting.
