I think I did the right thing, and bought this lens tonight

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...:IT&ih=001

Now just got to wait and see what it is like when it arrives!

Nothing wrong with my Pentax 50-200mm kit lens, but wanted the greater reach, (and it should a bit less unwieldy than my current 70-300mm manual lens) plus I have serious lens envy (SLE) from seeing Alison's lastest crop of pictures!

That's my lens, well, not literally! lol!

I am getting a new lens soon, hopefully either a Tamron 200-500mm something or other (ask Roy, he knows) or a

Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG Pentax AF
Anybody jealous yet? Hehehehehe:blah:

Alison, you're going to lovethat 170-500 Sigma! I got mine off of ebay about 3 months ago & you can really reach out & touch something with it. As long as you have a decent tripod!!! I don't have too many problems with hand holding my 300mm BUT with that big of a piece of glass, you'll pick up on your heart beating! I remember reading somewhere of a guy who was trained as a sniper in the military & trained as a wildlife photographer after his service. He said that breathing, timing, & motion HAD to be similar when shooting with big lenses as with high powered sniper rifles! Anyway, sorry.. another example of my rambling!!!:G

Here's a couple at 500mm at the St. Louis Zoo like the day after I got it! The leopard was about 75 yards (sorry.. bad with metric) away & the eagle was about 15 yards (sorry about the vertical lines in the eagle .. they have strong fishing-like wire for bars on his cage & couldn't pse them out) Hope ya like!

I'm glad somebody has experience with the sigma lens, would also like to see some samples from the Tamron as well to help me decide but that should be another thread eh!

Alison,

I just got my camera back, yipee. Dashed out with the Tamron lens on and snapped off about 20 shots as the sun was going down, a bit hard to demonstrate the lens in those conditions.

Basically, seems very sharp, darn heavy, I was using a monopod and will have to have a play and get real confortable with it.

Here are 2 shots from the 20. I just need to get familiar with it, especially when you are chasing a ball about... :?

Straight off the camera and resized, no PP. ISO200, 500mm f/5.6 1/200th.
