Ok, I decided I would go for either a Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG Pentax AF or the Tamron equivalent, can't remember the details on the Tamron off hand.

Anyway, after much searching, it seems that if I want the Sigma lens, I have to order it from Jessops and it can take two to four weeks but going on past experience with them, it could take even longer. Plus, they charge alot more than other places do for the same things they sell.

I can't find the Tamron one anywhere in the uk either.

I visited Sigma's site and it gave a list of companies that have supposedly committed to selling that lens, I rang one of the companies and got told they don't have it.

Everywhere I try, I get the same answer, they don't have it and most haven't even said it can be ordered in.

I went to a camera shop, supposedly a specialist shop and got told "we don't sell anything that big" Well really, for a camera shop that is supposed to be one of the best in the area, they aren't up to much as far as I am concerned.

So, it looks like I won't be getting another lens after all. I am so disappointed to say the least.

I won't order from ebay because I have very little trust in some of the sellers, I will only order things that don't cost that much, certainly not prepared to risk £500 plus.

I toyed with the idea of a 2x teleconverter but even that is going to be hard to get hold of. What is it with this poxy country, why can't we have some of the good lenses here too. They sell them for Nikon and Canon and even Minolta but Pentax, forget it.

It really makes me wonder if I should have gone for one of the other brands now, much as I love my camera to pieces, I don't want to be so limited with lenses.

The plans I had for my winter photography will now not happen because a 300mm is just not powerful enough for those bird shots.

I could cry, I really could!

alison. you might think about this
http://www.thkphoto.com/products/tokina/afl-12b.html
i've heard good things about it . with a 500mm lens you are definately going to need a very steady tripod, especially at the sigmas largest aperture of only f6.3.
have you factored in the price of a tripod??

Damn, not a UK link, anything over 300mm in the UK is going to be hard to get hold of it seems.

Also, that Tokina lens, in the specs it said for canon and nikon mounts.

Have you checked amazon?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-AF170-...;s=electronics

It says nothing about the mount, but you can contact the seller to see if it's for Pentax.

I've done a quick google search and got soem results in Italy and Germany.
Perhaps you can order it from there. Delevery costs won't be that expensive and inside the EU there's no extra taxes or duties.

good luck on the hunt!

Try Bristol Cameras, they are on the internet, good service and reasonably priced. Be prepared to wait for at least a couple of weeks for the pentax fit of any large sigma and tamron, they simply don't hold them in stock.

They are used lenses, I want brand new.

At the moment, I am too frustrated to even think about it, and to be honest, for a quiet life, I would rather just forget the whole idea.

Might consider selling what I have and switching brands for more lens availability.

That's just it, I want to know it's in stock, I won't order something and wait forever. My past experience on having to do this has put me right off, the goods never show up.

Just rang Bristol Cameras, they said they can TRY to get one in, TRY being the operatvie word, no definite yes we can get it and how long it will take.

I seriously regret going for Pentax now, all the lenses are available to easily for nikon and canon.
