Default Optio 33L Crash Problem

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have recently purchased two Pentax Optio 33L digital cameras, one for my father and one for myself.

Generally speaking, both cameras have been fantastic. Unfortunately I have noticed a repeating problem on both of them that seems to happen at random (very roughly every week or so).

Occasionally, during normal use, the live view on the LCD monitor will completely freeze. Sometimes, pressing the "play" button takes you successfully out of the live view and provides a picture of your last photograph (as expected), however, the camera then fails to respond to any button presses at all and won't even turn off. The only thing you can do at this stage is to temporarily open the battery compartment and then restart.

On one occasion when my wife was using the camera, the problem occurred and she could not turn off the camera and so waited for the auto-power-off to do it's thing - it appears as though it didn't power-down itself and the batteries were subsequently flattened!

As I mentioned, this problem seems to occur on a random basis, I'm not sure what circumstances (button presses, modes etc) the camera is in when the problem does occur. Additionally, I have noticed this problem on both of the 33L cameras, not just mine, but my father's also.

Interestingly, I bought my father's from a shop in Swindon (UK) and I bought mine a few weeks later from Pixmania.co.uk.

Has anyone else experienced this type of problem, I have noticed that an Optio S user has sufferred from a similar problem.

Kindest regards,
Jeremy Siddons

Default Pentax - do they give a hoot?

I sent this query to Pentax a couple of months ago, still no response??!!

I wonder how many cameras I would have to buy for them to care?

No response from anyone yet to this query, but I had to respond that I also have this problem with my 33L. I also "fix" it by opening the battery case and removing them for a second then it is fine.

Are you sure it's the Optio 33L and not the Optio 33LF? I know the Optio 33LF at times had problems with freezing due to Sandisk memory cards and a Firware was issued to correct that problem.

I have not heard of any problems of the Optio 33L freezing up. I have had my sample for more then 2 years now and have never had a case of freezing.

Optio 33L - has no viewfinder

Optio 33LF - has viewfinder
