Hey HappyMac,

Unfortunately, the Optio S50 is not compatible with Windows 98 as mentioned on the box and in the PC Connection manual. The Optio S50 conforms to USB MASS STORAGE Specifications and compatible Operating Systems will automatically detect the Optio S40 and build their own USB Mass Storage Drivers.

Therefore, the included CD-Rom does not contain any USB Drivers as they are not required.

With that being said I have found a way to connect the Optio S50 to a Windows 98/SE platform using the Optio 450/550 USB Drivers.

Just thought would let you kow...

From South Africa......a big Thank You. Your info worked !!!!

As I have the Pentax iST DS, I talked my Boss into buying the S40.

He arrived back at work & tried to install & look at the pictures he had taken.

What would we do without the 'net & people like yourself offering solutions.

Now.....any little tricks for my iST DS ????

Hey Whostops,

Thanks, sorryabout the late reply I've been very busy...

I'm glad to hear the information was helpful...

As for the *ist DS you can use the same drive & proceedures to connect it to a Windows 98/SE system.

Just in case you didn'tknow you can also use the PENTAX REMOTE ASSISTANT Software on the *ist DS. I've used it and it works well.

You can download theREMOTE Assistant Software from the link below.

Well I hope this helps,

Thanks again,

Hi Info-Man. I am having problems with the Optio S50 and Windows 98SE. Device Manager recognizes it as "Other Devices/USB Device" but it won't recognize it as a Pentax. I've pointed it to the folders containing the various Pentax drivers that you've mentioned but it says they aren't suitable. I don't think it's the INF files that's the problem. Is it the camera that not communicating with the computer telling it that it's a Pentax device? If not then what is the proper INF file to point the computer toward. Thanks for the help.

Hey Sookas,

Did you download the PDF file? It shows step by step what you have to do.

OPTIO S50 - Win 98 USB Support PDF

http://www.pentax.ca/support/s50/optio_s50_win98_eng.pdf

At one point in the installation it will say "Driver not written for this device do you want to continue anyway" at that point you have to say YES continiue anyway.

You may have to go through it again a 2nd time.

Let me know if you have anymore problems.

Thanks so much Info-Man. That did the trick. I wasn't "forcing" Windows to recognize the camera. Now it's working beautifully. Thanks again.
