I have recently bought the S4i digital camera and have found it to be good so far. The only problem i am having with it is a clicking sound of some sort (like gears) i've exchanged it once but still have the sound. Is this normal or should I take it back again for one that doesn't make the noise?

Well, I don't own your camera model. But, since nobody else has responded, I'll tell you what it probably is.

Many camera have a continuous focus feature that gets them "close" to where they need to be before you actually press the shutter button. That way, the autofocus works a little faster since the lens elements don't need to move as far to obtain a focus lock.

That's probably what you are hearing.

I've owned a couple of Nikons with this feature, andone of them was quite loud when it was enabled (you could enable or disable it with these).

I've got a little Konica KD-510z pocket camera that also does this (even though it's an undocumented feature). If I listen to the lens mechanism, then point the camera to something at a different distance, I can hear the focus mechanism working.

It might be something to do with the lenses but when i move the camera it doesn't make the sound. The sound is made on the first part of focusing when i push the shutter button half way. That's when the noise happens and not anywhere else when taking a picture. I'm just wondering if this will be a problem in the future and if there is like a gear gone bad or something or if its just perfectly normal cause the sound is worrying me as this is my first digital camera.

Thanks for the help though

The autofocus mechanisms in some modelsare noisy. That's what you are hearing when you half press the shutter button (autofocus mechanism).

If you've had two different cameras with the same noises, then chances are it's normal for this model.
