I know it's possible for others cams using the same mpeg4 codec (ex: casio EX-Z750)
Did someone manage to convert a video (divx or others) to be playable on the optio's lcd ?

I know we must obtain a video whith these features (thx gspot) :

Codec video : mpeg4 M4S2 (640*480, 29.97 fps, 2984 kb/s)
Codec audio: dvi_adpcm (mono, 89 kb/s, 22050 Hz)

But how convert inmicrosoft M4S2 ? I can only in MP42 (which is not compatible)...

As far as I know Casio EX Z750 and Optio S5n/z use the same firmware. So what sould work on Casio should work on Optio as well. Try it with the QuickTime plug-in for Casio:

You're right. You should try to convert it to MPEG-4. There are a few programs of this kind. The most recent one I found is http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/34074

Hi there, can someone explain me how that would work ? Does that mean you could convert any movie file into an mp4 format that you could then playback on your pentax s5z ?
I tried that with a casio ex-z55 (respecting the exact same specs as a movie sample i shot) and couldn't get it to work, seems like there is a way for the camera to check if a movie file originated from the actual camera (maybe a database, or a trace on the file made, i don't really know).
Did anyone actually manage to view a movie that wasn't made from the actual camera on a s5z ?
Thanks for helping guys....

cheers

i searched for wav files on my computer and tried a few random ones.
i found some from GTA Vice City play fine on the camera as they are using the same codec/bitrate.
But they only show up and play if i rename them to fit the filename system the camera uses eg IMGPxxxx.WAV
did you try that with the video files you had?
now if i could only work out how to encode music to those same specs (IMA ADPCM 89kb/s 22050hz mono)

I finnaly got the s5z !

well i tried encoding videos but the problem is that casio uses the microsoft iso mpeg 4 v1.1 codec which does not exist as an encoder. I have tried several hacks with no success, i will try with wav files but wav playback is not really that interesting to me, i was really looking forward to play some movies tho =)
oh well it's a great camera

I've managed to get it working.
Its pretty simple, M4S2 is just Divx5 with a few modifications.

What you need:
Windows XP
Virtual Dub (im using 1.5.10)
Divx 5 codec (im using 5.1.1)
AviC FourCC Changer

Step 1 - Virtual Dub Setup
- Open your video file with Virtual Dub
- Goto Video>Filters and click add, select 'Resize' and enter
320x240 (or 640x480) Click 'OK' twice.
- Goto Video>Compression. Select Divx 5 and click configure.
- Set the bitrate to whatever you want (i've only tried low bit rates, 100-200 etc)
- Still n the Divx Config page click the 'Video' tab
- Set the 'Max Keyframe Interval' to
1
- Click OK twice
- Now you should be back at the main Vdub window, click File and 'Save Wav'
- Save the wav file to your desktop with whatever name you want.
- Leave Virtual Dub open.

Step 2 - Converting the Audio
- Goto Start>All Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Sound Recorder
- File>Open and select the wav file you just saved on your desktop.
- File>Save As
- Click the 'Change' button at the bottom on the 'Save As' window.
- Change the 'Format' to
IMA ADPCM
- Change the 'Attributes' to 22.050KHz, 4 Bit, Mono, 10 kb/sec
- You can also change it to 11.025KHz, 4 Bit, Mono, 5 kb/sec for a lower quality, smaller file.
- Click OK
- Enter a new filename
- Click 'Save'

Step 3 - Encoding the video
- Go back to Virtual Dub
- Goto 'Audio' and click 'WAV Audio' then select the newly saved file on your desktop.
- File>Save as AVI
- Save the file as
'IMGP0001.AVI'
- Wait for the file to encode

Step 4 - Changing the FourCC
- Open AviC
- Open the video file you just created.
- Change both fields to
'M4S2' and click apply.

Thats it, you're done!
Just transfer the video to your camera and play it!

It works great whith my s5n!

The only thing i didn't do is to set the 'Max Keyframe Interval' to 1...

Thx nadnerb, you're my hero ! :bye:

if someone wants to try : IMGP0001.avi

I would add one thing to the step1 if you want add black bands to your video.
By ex, an original video in cinemascope (640x272) converted in s5n video (640x480) would be deformed

Step 1 - Virtual Dub Setup
- Open your video file with Virtual Dub
- Goto Video>Filters and click add, select 'Resize' and enter:

new width 640
new height 272
and in "expand frame..."
frame width 640
frame height 480
Click 'OK' twice.
